This glorious national park is packed with lush forests, gushing waterfalls, pretty lakes and streams and beautiful mountain scenery. Highly recommend this hike to all.Famous for its jagged peaks and creaking glaciers, North Cascades National Park is a dream destination for adventurous hikers. Total distance was about 7 miles and we completed this in about 5 hr including the lunch stop. Also be aware that this is US Forest Service land and not National Park and they have a $5 charge for each car unless you have a National Park pass. The down side was not nearly as scenic as going up and seemed more difficult because of the numerous tree roots and rocks on the trail. Temperatures were relatively mild (high 50's) when we went and there was some light rain going up but it was a real surprise to reach the summit and snow started falling as we sat down for lunch.

The views all the way up were quite nice and lunch at the top was spectacular. The uphill was relatively easy until the last mile or so and then there were some really steep parts just before reaching the summit. We did the hike in the counterclockwise direction which was suggested by our Falcon guidebook and this seemed to be the best way. Luckily the trail was not overly crowded. The day we went was a Monday so crowds were not expected but the parking lot still filled up. The only negative was that it took us over an hour to drive from Marblemount to the trailhead which was about 52 miles away. It was not in our plans but we tried it anyway and we were very glad we did. The rangers at the Visitor Center recommended the Maple Pass Loop. My wife and I were visiting North Cascades for 2 days and were looking for a hike to substitute for Cascade Pass. There were plenty of parking spaces when we arrived just before 9:30, but when we left at 3:30 there were a bunch of cars parked along Hwy 20 in both directions. Maybe the lighting would be better in the morning? 5 mi to Rainy Lake trail at the end but the view from the beginning of the short, rocky switchbacks coming down was better so I wouldn't have missed it.

My camera got a lot of action today! We added in the. The views just kept coming as we continued up the ridge with views of the mountains and lakes on the other side of the ridge and and around to the other side. I'm not sure how the lighting would work if you went CW and hit it in the afternoon. The lake was smooth and we had a gorgeous reflection with reds and oranges going up the mountain across the lake. That took us to a clearing right at the shore. We tended toward the left and crossed the creek right after seeing the lake. As we got closer to the lake, paths start branching off. Then we came to a meadow filled with red, yellow and orange. We didn't see any color in the forest at the beginning and I thought we were too early for fall color. We hiked Maple Pass CCW today, Tue 9/21/21, including the spur to Lake Ann and we threw in Rainy Lake at the end.
